Sun Entertainment co-invested in a French-Japanese film, UMAMI, directed by Slony Sow and staring Gérard Depardieu, Pierre Richard, Rod Paradot, Sandrine Bonnaire, Kyozo Nagatsuka, Akira Emoto, Kyoko Koizumi, among others. Slony is currently in post-production on UMAMI in France. Forty years after being reunited for the first time on screen in the cult comedy La Chèvre, Gérard Depardieu and Pierre Richard find themselves in UMAMI.
Storyline: Gabriel Carvin [Gerard Depardieu], one of France’s most successful chefs, finally receives his third star. It should be a time of celebration. But Gabriel has never been happy, and doesn’t know why. Devoted solely to his kitchen, he drinks too much, his wife [Sandrine Bonnaire] is sleeping with another man [Antoine Dulery], and he has little to no relationship with either of his two sons, Jean [Bastien Bouillon] and Nino [Rod Paradot]. When his best friend [Pierre Richard] attempts hypnosis, Gabriel, to his great surprise, recalls his loss in competition to a Japanese chef [Kyozo Nagatsuka] in 1978 who defeated him with a simple bowl of ‘ramen’ noodles. Now this superhero of French culinary genius must learn for himself why his elaborate skills were surpassed by a bowl of Japanese noodles, and in the process maybe also learn why this renowned and celebrated man has made such a huge mess of his life.
